Groom For Happy Pets
Lynn Goddard
December 15,2002

Your dog's health is as important as your own. Regular meals, plenty of water and daily exercise are important in the daily care of your dog. But don't leave out regular grooming. Brushing and bathing your dog is an essential part to good health. Skin problems occur in the absence of it. Dirt and dander accumulate and can cause itchy and flakey skin.
Regular brushing and bathing stimulates the natural oils in the follicles and promotes a healthier coat and makes a happier, more comfortable pet. There are groomers in many localities that have the products and tools to groom your pet for his specific needs such as, ear cleaners, special shampoos for certain skin conditions and different brushes and combs for many kinds of coats. Your pet's veterinarian can bathe him and trim his nails but you will sometimes pay a little more, since the veterinarian performs examinations at that time also.

Inch by Inch
A groomer sees just about every inch of your pet. If there is anything going on at the surface, the groomer is likely to see it and bring it to your attention. Quite often it is the groomer who notices an ear infection or problems in unexposed areas. Sometimes an owner may think they have rid their pet of fleas and finds out later from their groomer that their pet still has them. Flea baths are a common treatment amongst many groomers. Some pets may have underlying growths that may go unnoticed, especially if the growth is in a place that the owner doesn’t touch or see, such as between the leg and body and between the toes or under the feet.

Info?
If you have a pet and are unsure of his grooming needs, you can ask your veterinarian or find a local groomer. PetEcucation.com provides basic grooming information, vaccination requirements, dietary needs, and much more for your dog and other types of pets as well.

AKC
If you would like more information about your dogs' breed, The American Kennel Club's web site is useful for finding information about the grooming requirements and what it is like to own that particular breed. There are also links to rescue sites where you may find a dog in need of a home, if you are looking to adopt.
The American Kennel Club Inc. recognizes 150 breeds of dogs and categorizes them into 7 groups. It provides a breed standard for each dog in a descriptive manner. This means that the AKC gives a description of what the ideal dog would look like of its’ breed. In dog shows, judges refer to the breed standards as a guide to judge dogs in shows. This is a great site to visit if you are interested in learning about the many different breeds of dogs.
!!!
Keep in mind your pet's grooming. There is always groom for happier pets!

Organic Food
Lynn Goddard
December 16, 2002

???*
Have you ever wondered why organic foods are priced a little higher than other foods?
There are many people who take a great deal of time and effort to bring consumers foods free of pesticides, herbicides, artificial flavors, artificial colors, and genetically engineered ingredients.

Crops & Produce ***************************************
The process of producing a product and labeling it as “organic” is a task that can cost the grower much more than it costs the conventional grower. The land that organic producers use has to be free from pesticide and herbicide applications for a specified number of years. Manmade fertilizers cannot be used, and manure from animals has to be manure from organically grown animals. Also, the amount of manure that is put on the land is limited to keep nitrate levels down. Growers of organic produce often have to resort to cultivating the land to prevent weeds and planting insect repelling plants to prevent insect damage. Some of these regulations vary from state to state.

Animals ****************************************
Animals raised for organic product have to be fed organic forages. The forages are expensive if the producer has to purchase them and equally so if they have to grow them. The housing has to meet the standards set by the organic association that certifies the grower. The association sets regulations and procedures that must be followed by the producer, and specific bookkeeping is required and is routinely submitted to the certifying association or is inspected on the premises. Basically, everything that is fed, applied topically or injected to an animal has to be approved by the certifying association. Every product that is used and its reason for use must be recorded. Many producers use homeopathic remedies to treat illness in their animals. These remedies also have to be approved by the association.

Certifying Organic ****************************************
NOFA known as Northeast Organic Farmers Association is made up of 7 state organizations. NOFANY is the primary farm certification in New York State. The association promotes ecological farming and keeps consumers informed about organic products and where the products are available. The website has a page that lists all of the certified organic producers in New York, the organic product they produce and where they market it.

USDA & AMS *****************************************
The United States Department of Agriculture and Agricultural Marketing Services provide a website that is titled The National Organic Program. It provides organic production and handling standards, lists of certifying agents, state organic program approval procedures and much more pertaining to organic certification and production and handling for producers and consumers.

Deer on Campus
"How close is to close"
By Caleb Scott

It was recently brought to my attention through my uncle Ray Scott, who is head of the grounds here at TC3, that there is an over population of deer on campus. The destructive damage caused by these deer will only increase, as the "rut" or mating season comes to full swing. Ray has informed me that much of the ornamental shrubbery has taken hard blows. This will worsen over the winter due to the poor acorn and wild apple output this season. I'm currently enrolled in TC3 as a full time student studying photography, it is my goal to become a Wildlife Communications Specialist. After hearing of the problem I decided it would be in my best interest to investigate this damage. After classes one gray Monday I retreated to my car and suited up in full camo attire. If I was to assess the damage it would be done up close and personal. I admit there were some paparazzi feelings as I embarked on this adventure, seeking onto uncharted territory for an inevitable goal. To find out just what all these deer were doing. The evidence of their presence could be seen simply walking around the gardens, their droppings could be found along with an unsightly browse line through the shrubbery. I wanted more. So I began hiking around the overgrown section of the grounds; it was not surprising to find ultimate deer habitat. There were young crab apple trees, tall grasses for concealment and food along with lots of brush to hide in. Off the bat I saw three beautiful doe and a young buck taking their siesta under some elderberry bushes. I was not satisfied--four deer could not do all that damage. So I pushed on, circling from the grounds building around the property line and below the pond where I saw six more deer. Things really heated up as I entered the Christmas tree plot where an astonishing nine more deer were munching away at the profits of the planter. I proceeded past the dorms to the upper wood lot where another herd of about seven deer spooked. As I watched them run away I realized they were trapped, confined to a couple of acres of hard woods. They feared sprinting into the open field in the daylight or crossing the road so they simply ran in circles to avoid me. All in all I saw twenty-six deer. Double that and you have about the amount currently stationed there, that's not counting those who enter in from the farmer's land next door. With such little land supporting such a large population it's no wonder there is so much property damage. It's evident there's a problem but how and when we will address this is the issue. How close is too close?

Mosquitoes: The Bloodiest War
Daniel Davis
Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2002

"Mosquitoes cause more human suffering than any other organism [on earth], with over one million people dying from mosquito-borne diseases every year". [Tom Floore, 2000] With so many mosquitoes and so many arboviral diseases (over a hundred kinds) there is not likely to be a fix-all solution any time soon.

Some of our greatest adversaries are those we least expect. Thousands have died to date, directly as a result of the war on terrorism, which is undergoing continuous coverage on the news today. However there are many more fighting and dying in a war we seldom glamorize. It is a war against the mosquito. No, I'm not talking about the De Havilland Mosquito bomber from World War II. I'm talking about the rumored national bird of Canada -- the tiny scaly-winged insect with feathery antennae and a wicked thirst for your blood.

The viruses these mosquitoes carry are known as arboviruses, which is short for arthropod-borne viruses. Arboviruses are spread by haematophagous arthropod vectors (blood sucking insects). [Dr Ray Baumann, 1997] These vectors include mosquitoes and biting flies. Arboviruses carried by mosquitoes are known to cause encephalitis, and are therefore known as Arboviral Encephalitides. All of these arboviruses cause a swelling of the brain called encephalitis, which can progress to paralysis, seizures, coma and death. Arboviral Encephalitides carried by mosquitoes, of the genus Culex in particular, are infecting humans in every part of the world.

The media has recently latched on to one of these Culex-carried virus's stories, and that story is about the most recent arbovirus to come to the United States: West Nile Virus. Where would you think WNV first showed up in the US? Right at "ground zero," the ever infamous area of New York City that fell terrorist under attack on September 11th. Public health officials throughout the nation have been on the lookout for West Nile Virus since 1999, when the virus first made its appearance in the NYC area. A large majority of the US cases since that time have been concentrated around New York. One of the main reasons West Nile Virus is such a concern to the public eye, is that it has quickly become one of the most widespread of these viruses; characteristically infecting people in Africa and Europe at first, and now spreading quickly through the United States. [Minnesota Departmet Of Health]

Is WNV our only concern related to mosquitoes in the United States? West Nile Virus may be a new scare and spreading fast, but it is only one of a number of potentially fatal vector carried viruses here in the US. Among the others that are counted today are LaCrosse encephalitis, Western Equine Encephalitis, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and St. Louis Encephalitis. Symptoms of these arboviruses can include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, paralysis, and in some cases, death.

How can you tell when a virus is coming to your home town? It used to be a warning sign for anyone in a mine to get out or die of toxic fumes, as soon as the birds they brought in with them fell off their perches and died. This is also a part of the detection process for arboviral encephalitides. Crows and jays are especially susceptible to the virus, and when the dead birds are noticed and submitted for testing, they can effectively warn that a virus has arrived to a certain area. For many of the equine encephalitis viruses, the horses will be affected long before the human cases develop, since human cases of virus replication are less commonly a direct result of the infection's presence in an area. [Minnesota Department of Health]

Perhaps one of the more prevalent reasons this battle is not likely to be glorified, is that it is not likely to be won. With so many mosquitoes and so many arboviral diseases (over a hundred kinds) there is not likely to be a total solution any time soon. A vaccine may be the most direct means of prevention, and once you have had an arbovirus you are immune for life. However, a vaccine is not available yet, and the mortality rate for some of these diseases is over fifty percent. The only means of prevention we have now is vector population control. As long as the community and individual citizens are keeping up on mosquito control, we may not need to depend on the hope of future vaccines for any mosquito-born disease.

IS IT ALL IN YOUR HEAD?
Name Kathy O’Rourke
November 17, 2002

All year long you've been happy-go-lucky, content and seemed to have plenty of energy. Recently though, you've been lethargic, depressed, and feeling pretty hopeless. There isn't any apparent reason for you to feel this way. Nothing is going all that wrong to make you feel this way and you don't quite understand what's going on.

If this describes you recently, you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. SAD is a disorder caused by the lack of bright lights and shortened days around the wintertime. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known. It is not a psychosomatic or imaginary illness.

If there is a chance that you may be suffering from SAD, it is very important for you to see your doctor. First, you'll need to rule out any underlying medical condition, and also rule out any other stress factors for you feeling this way. Then if your doctor diagnoses you with SAD, there is treatment available to put you back on the right track.

Light therapy is an effective treatment for SAD sufferers providing there are no suicidal tendencies. Light therapy provides the light that the dreariness of the cold, dark weather lacks. Your doctor may alternatively prescribe medication in more serious cases.

For more information about SAD, contact your doctor, mental health professional, or Internet Mental Health - Seasonal Affective Disorder .

Photographer gives good advice on getting published
by Jim Bosjolie
November 15, 2002

“Do it, do it a lot, and make a lot of mistakes.” So asserts Laura Strauss, published photographer, during a lecture she gave in the Forum on November 11th.

Students question the speaker.

Speaking for about an hour to a crowd of interested students, Laura gave insights on how she became a successful, i.e. paid, photographer.

First she states, “Figure out what you like, where you fit in, and how to make a living.” Laura started out as an artist but realized she did not want to be in a studio. She was working at an auction house when a patron invited her to work at Magnums--a photographic publishing house. There she had the opportunity to look at the proof sheets of some great photographers, and discovered that they averaged only one good or great picture a roll. This made her feel much better about photography.

She then worked for a book publishing firm where she learned about incorporating many photos into a book project that would sell.

Finally, Laura decided to go off on her own–which was scary. She has succeeded by a combination of luck and chutzpah. She explains doing projects involves going up to people you may not know and asking to photograph them.

Laura uses a 35mm camera with manual settings only, and stays away from digital cameras. “I’m a big believer in the negative,” she says. She also does not like cameras that do it all for you, including automatically adjusting for different lighting situations, but actually likes bad photographic situations because they push her into making something good out of them.

Laura offered this advice for those seeking to sell their pictures:

Look at the wish lists for various publications on the internet for employment, then put together a project and apply. Companies pay $100 and up for photos.

Have something special about your photos. Laura’s favorite pictures have three parts to them: foreground, middle and background. All three parts have something going on in them.

To build your portfolio, find” little moments” to take photos. Sell them later.

Try the internet for contests, foundations and amazing programs for students. Laura’s presentation today was sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), an organization which “gives more support to artists and arts organizations in all disciplines than any other private organization in the country.”

Finally, don’t photograph things in which you’re not interested in.

Ms. Strauss took questions after her lecture, and invited attendees to pick up information on NYFA as they left.

The TC3 Pool
Christopher Meenan

Everytime I walk past the TC3 swimming pool, there are questions that run through my mind. Can anyone swim here? Are those people who are swimming everyday in a class? If so, how do I join? How much does it cost to swim? Etc. If you too have these questions you can now stop losing sleep over it because I have the answers.

If you are a student, teacher, or an employee at TC3 you have a chance to swim in the pool Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The pool is open during the hours of 11am-1:00pm, and from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Also, on Tuesdays and Thursdays you can swim 11:30am-1:00pm, and from 4:00pm-6:00pm, all for free.

The general public is welcome as well, just bring your bathing suits and you can join in on the fun as well. There is a small fee of one dollar, which is nothing. The phone commercials are always asking "What can you get for a dollar?" I would say swimming is a lot more fun than chatting on the phone for twenty minutes. At least this way you get some exercise.

So this should get us all in the pool knowing the hours it is open. Also, you can bring your friends who don't go to TC3 to join in on some pool time activities. There is a chalk board which gives you the pool's average temperature of the day, which I noticed is usually in the mid 80's. So I can't think of anything better to do than take a nice warm swim.

Open swimming is not the only thing that pool offers. It also gives people a chance to learn some water exercises with cheerful instructors. For fifteen dollars you get ten sessions. The ten sessions can be done Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from the hours of 10:00am-11:00am.

Also available are swimming lessons for kids. Pollywogs, the name of the age group 4-5 years old, and Frogs for ages 6-13 give kids the chance to become experienced swimmers. The two groups started October 21st and end November 20th. The Pollywogs have classes Mondays and Wednesdays beginning at 5:30pm and ending at 6:00pm. There is a fee of 35 dollars to become a Pollywog. The Frogs also meet Mondays and Wednesdays but from 6:00pm-7:00pm. The Frogs fee is 45 dollars.

I hope I can find some time to swim. I'm sure I can, there are plenty of time slots available. I hope to see you there also. Let's all jump in on the fun.

Back to School
Kathy O’Rourke
November 6, 2002

The reasons are endless. "I was raising my family;" "Not enough money;" "I partied too much when I was younger." If you’re over 30 years old and just going back to school--college that is, what is your reason for not going when you were younger? An increasing number of students in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and older are realizing the need for higher education and are doing something about it. Being an older student myself, this topic hit very close to home, so I decided to ask some older students around campus why they were there.

"Laurie", a mother of three in her early 40s, says that she has had the same job at a local university since high school. "Employees were being offered a higher wage right out of a two year school for similar positions, than I was getting after being there for 21 years." But after seeing all there was to offer at college, "Laurie" says she might even go in a different direction and start a new career.

"Bob", a construction worker in his 30s, says that it was simple, there was no money. He was a father at 20 and had three more children in 8 years. "Bob" is going back to school (with the help of financial aid) for Business Management and hopes to graduate in the spring. "Bob" says he wanted a career that he could retire from and he didn’t see himself retiring from the construction business.

As for myself, 20 years ago, I was looking for the next party and couldn’t be bothered to stay in school. Now I’m the mother of four, and going to college is the only way I know not to be poor anymore. Trying to raise four children with only an 11th grade education has proven to be next to impossible. At least above the poverty level it has. In hopes of providing a better life for my children, I will be completing my second degree at TC3 next month.

When asked if they felt comfortable around students young enough to be their own kids, all of the people I interviewed had the same answer: Absolutely! As a matter of fact, the diverse student population at TC3 is a fringe benefit. We can all learn so much from students of all ages, stuff you can’t learn in a classroom.

Recycling Inkjet Cartridges brings $ to Schools.
Lynn Goddard
Date 11/07/02

Recyclers USA is a company that recycles empty inkjet cartridges by refilling them. Estimates in 1998 showed that 200 million cartridges could end up in landfills. The company predicts that 38,000 tons of cartridges will be refilled. They found that most people are willing to donate their empty cartridges for a worthy cause, and they understand that it will benefit the environment.

If you are interested in donating your empty inkjet cartridges, contact your local public and private schools to find out if they are enrolled in the program. If they are not enrolled, they may be interested after speaking with you. Information about enrollment and forms can be found on the Recyclers USA website. If you are interested in donating to my children's school, Cortland Christian Academy, I am willing to pick up the cartridges at TC3. You can contact me at home: 844-8923, or work: 844-9890.

    Shaq returns to the court.
    by: Jeff Wood

After sitting for 12 games this season, on Nov. 22 Shaq made his come back in their 86-73 victory over the Chicago Bulls, scoring 17 points and 7 rebounds in only the 21 minutes that he played. Shaq said after the game, "I felt pretty good, kind of rusty. It felt good out there to be with the guys. We just have to try and get back on the right track. I think we all have to get used to playing with each other again." While Shaq sat the bench from an injured big toe, the Lakers went 3-9. The Lakers are 49-43 in games without O'Neal since he came to Los Angeles in 1996. This was a wake-up call for the Lakers, proving that they need Shaq to be a successful running unit. "I am as happy as can be, so glad he's back,'' Bryant said. "It makes the game easier.'' Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said, "Shaq likes the show part of the game, the style, and that's part of it that brings a joy to the game for us. It's nice to have Shaq back. He brings a certain amount of levity and intrigue to the game, no doubt about it. He was anxious and energetic and we got exactly what we hoped to get out of him tonight -- some points, minutes and a win,'' Jackson said after his return game. O'Neal didn't start, but came off the bench to a standing ovation in the first quarter. Fans in the sellout crowd of 19,000+ began chanting "We want Shaq!'' three minutes into the game. O'Neal started the second half after having 13 points and four rebounds in 10 minutes during the first half. He played the first 5:36 of the third quarter, sat out the first three minutes of the fourth, then sat for good with 3:14 left and the Lakers up 81-65. Shaq's Back!!

    Time To Register For Spring
    Kristin Hoffman
    November 17, 2002

In two weeks it will be time for Thanksgiving, and in a little more than a month it will be Christmas. What does this mean exactly? Well it means that the fall semster is coming to an end. For some this means winter graduation, and for others it means the beginning of the Spring semester. Now is the time to register for Spring semester.

There are two ways that you can register for your spring classes. The first thing you should do is make an appointment with your advisor to talk about your future plans, and find out what courses you need to take in order to graduate. After you talk to your advisor the choices really split on how to register. You can either register online, or through the admissions office.

If you choose to register online, you need to make sure that you are signed up to register online by asking your advisor. Once you are ready to register online all you have to do is go to IQ web. This site is availbale through the TC3 website. Once you are in IQ web just click on the register button and you are on your way. All you have to do after that is type in the class that you are looking for, and classes with the times and class information will pop up. You add the class that you want to your shopping basket, and from there just follow the online instrustions.

There are some things that are a minus to registering online. One of them is, sometimes a class that you want or have to take will tell you that you can't take it 'cause you need a prerequisite of some kind. If you have taken a prerequisite that is higher than what is asked for, or if you are taking the prerequisite at the same time as the course requiring it, you will need to go to the admissions office, and have them add that class to your schedule for you.

The other option in registering is to grab a TC3 Course Catalog (available at the College and Career center), look up the classes that you want, add them to your admissions form and than head over to the Admissions office and have them do the computer work for you.

So whether you choose to register online, or the old fashioned way, it is time to register. Skip the headache, and register now, before the classes that you want or need are filled.

    NFL Predictions
    Nick Babel

    Nov. 26, 2002

What can you say about this years NFL playoff picture? Two words come to mind. WIDE OPEN! The fact that the new Divisions in the NFL have changed the teams around, and the lack of many strong teams, leaves the question: Who will be there come playoff time?

A great example of the confusion of the playoff picture is the AFC East Division. The Miami Dolphins lead the division with a 7-4 record. The New York Jets and the New England Patriots are tied in second with a 6-5 record, followed by the 5-6 Buffalo Bills. No team really stands out as a favorite there. The Bills even have a pretty good shot at it. The Bills will be facing the Dolphins on Sunday, which might answer some of the questions in this division. Or maybe confuse things even more. If Buffalo wins, Miami would drop to 7-5 and the Bills would be 6-6. The Patriots will be facing the Detroit Lions and should easily be 7-5 after that one. The Jets will be facing the Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football and will probably lose that game, dropping them to 6-6. That would leave the standings, Miami 7-5, New England 7-5, Buffalo 6-6, and New York 6-6. This would leave the Division just as confused as it already seems to be, especially when you consider that after this week Buffalo goes on to face New England, which could really screw things up.

This is just one of the NFL’s “Your guess is as good as mine” Divisions. The AFC West is the other division with a four team battle for first, but all of the other Divisions in the NFL have three teams vying for first, with the exception of the NFC North where the Green Bay Packers are running away with their Division with an 8-3 record. So if you’re the kind of person that bets on who will be in the playoffs then at least you have the Packers. (Packers have lost two straight games).

    Online Class Controversy
    Chris Richmond

TC3 is a community college that has a lot to offer. TC3 is a college that prides itself in offering students a wide selection of courses and numerous majors. No matter what you're looking to study, chances are TC3 is a great place to start. In addition to TC3's wide selection of courses, the college has further sought to meet the needs of students with the addition of online classes. These online classes offer unprecedented convenience for students. Online classes make it easier than ever for people to get an education. One advantage of TC3's online classes is that they offer a wide selection of courses just like their traditional classes. Students in many different majors have the opportunity to take advantage of these classes. On the surface these online classes seem wonderful, however, they are not without their controversy. Many people wonder if online classes are delivering the same quality of education that traditional classes offer. With online classes, it's impossible to achieve the unique teacher-student relationship and learning experience of in-school classes. Students are, in many ways, left to fend for themselves. Online classes require students to be more responsible. They have to keep track of their work and due dates without a lot of guidance from their teacher. This lack of guidance from a teacher can sometimes cause confusion, and lead to failure among students. However, most students are pleased to discover that these classes appear much easier when compared to their in-school classes. Many students notice a large reduction in the amount of work, time, and effort they put into their online classes. Simply put, most online classes contain less work than traditional classes. This is very appealing to many students but the question of, "is the student receiving a proper education through online classes," is often neglected. This lack of extensive work may lead to students obtaining less knowledge than they would receive from traditional classes. No matter what your opinion of online classes is, their popularity is not to be disputed. TC3 has become well known for their extensive list of online classes drawing in many new students to get an education. People will continue to debate over the efficiency of online classes, but if they are giving more people the opportunity to get an education, then it is fair to say that online classes at TC3 are here to stay. It is up to the leaders and instructors at TC3 to fine-tune these classes offering convenience and a great education for all students to enjoy.

    TC3 Annual Open House
    Kristin Hoffman
    November 6, 2002

On Friday November 8th, Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) will be holding it's annual Open House for anyone who is interested in the college and the programs that it offers. The Open House will begin around 11:30am in the forum and will go until about 1:30pm. Tours of the campus and the housing area will be given. Students will have the chance to get any questions that they have answered, as well as learn more about the college itself, and the programs that are offered at TC3. The students will even have a chance to meet some of the school's faculty members.

One second year student at TC3 said "I wish that I had gone to the Open House when I had the chance. That way I probably would not be so lost about what I want to do, and I might even have had a better and more personal relationship with my professors before classes even started."

Another student said "It's a great way to see what kind of people go to the school so you can tell first hand if this is the school for you."

A Winter Driving Primer for Commuting Students

    Elektra Hammond

    7 November 2002

With the arrival of colder weather and snow, it's so much easier to forget the simple things--like turning off your headlights. And almost everyone does it at least once in their lifetime. It's an upstate New York Rite of Passage. It's something to give some thought to, especially if your car is no longer in its prime. Here at TC3, there are lots of options.

    You are not alone.

Want to learn how to jumpstart your car?
    www.carbuyingtips.com/jumpstart.htm

The first thing to do if you're stuck, especially if you did just leave your headlights on, and you're pretty sure that you only need a jump start, go to Campus Security. They'll fix you right up and get you on your way. This is clearly the cheapest and fastest option.

    Other ways to cope:

AAA - The most popular way to get roadside assistance anytime, anywhere. A yearly membership covers towing, jumpstarts and overall "rescue" while you're on the road. Want to join? Call 800-222-4347 or click on the AAA logo.

Get your car towed or jumped by a pro - A number of service stations in the area offer 24-hour towing, and will service your vehicle for a fee. Check under towing in the yellow pages for phone numbers and other information.

Take a bus. If it's going to be easier to handle tomorrow (a friend will jumpstart you or help you fix it), consider taking a bus home. Both TCAT (277-RIDE) and Cortland Transit (758-3383) service TC3. Bus schedules are available in the main lobby or click on the respective logos.

Call a friend - a popular favorite. Catch a ride home with a friend and deal with it later. After all, tomorrow the weather might be better.

Remember, school is important. But it's more important to be safe. So drive carefully, keep your vehicle maintained, and keep your risks to a minimum.

    Happy Trails!

    SBE Regional Convention
    Natasha Sadakova
    October 12, 2002

The Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona, New York
    Thursday, September 26, 2002
This convention was for engineers and production professionals who work in Media and Broadcast.

    Global Streams http://www.globalstreams.com

Global Stream makes a product for Live Broadcasting and Post Production.  At this convention they demonstrated a new product, which is called Globe Caster Studio 8000/4000. I was very impressed with this product because you can switch cameras and backgrounds simultaneously (virtual camera switcher); plus you can create non-linear timelines of a line switch, dramatically reducing turn-around time for post-production fixes.  The company representatives demonstrated the easy-to-use communications tool that allows users to create powerful presentations right from the desktop to captivate and engage viewers.

Video Sound of Ithaca, Inc. http://videosound.com

Another broadcasting production company which I contacted was "Video Sound of Ithaca,Inc." (which is a local company, from Ithaca).  They also exhibited new editing technology, which they demonstrated on their new equipment and other products, such as, the Steadicam Mount. I am new to all this technology, and I found out that with this Steadicam Mount, we can run with the camera while keeping the pictures perfectly steady.

    "Laird Telemedia"  http://lairdtelemedia.com

Laird Telemedia demonstrated their products, and what I learned was that at TC3 we will be using these products for editing.

This conference was very educational and I learned much information from it. I think this was very helpful in sharing information and moving forward to newer technologies that will be easier to use.  The CBE Regional Convention was an interesting and educational collection of manufacturers, distributors and representatives of companies, which displayed the latest in broadcast and production gear, much of it digital and high-definition.

    Welcome to Thee our Home
    Missy Brown
    October 24, 2002

Have you ever seen so many things to tantalize the mind? Well I have, and right here in New York State at the  Sterling Renaissance Festival held right here in Central New York.

There seems to be something for everyone, throughout   the day and weekend. Such as Shakespeare, jousting, opera and a multitude of other things.

This guy has an abundance of stories about his dead skunks, muskrats and other assorted animals.

This dragon  is used for molding wax into wax candle figurines.

Each year there is something a bit different to offer. What may be in store for next year and what changes they have thought about for the future is yet to be told.

The summer of 2000, we decided to sit down and watch the various people and the acts that were going on around us. Unbeknownst to us, we were going to be involved in a skit performed on a spur of the moment by the Washer-Women Wenches.

The wenches were discussing how they had recently each found the one true love of their life. One of the wenches had stated that she was so in love with this new love of hers that she dropped her last sweetheart, my husband, just so that she could enjoy her new found heartthrob. Come to find out, this heartthrob of theirs, all five of them happened to be dating the same guy, who was also played by a gentleman in the crowd who had also decided to sit down for a rest. I believe that this type of thing would illustrate how the interactivity goes on throughout each day whether you plan on attending it or not.

There is a program of the Festival's planned out events that are laid out in a chart. It shows the different activities that go on at various times of the day.

This chart doesn't include a multitude of other events and happenings. Some of the other occurrences include blacksmithing, pewter being hand-hammered into bowls, jewelry-making and a multitude of other fascinating goods being made and other acts being played out. The photo below shows a gentleman demonstrating his art.

The website summation is: "A thrill to the excitement of over 80 stage and street performances. Meet more than 200 professional actors and stagehands that recreate the look and feel of an English Renaissance Village.

You will revel in the raucous doings at every corner you turn. Join the merriment at the pub sing, wench auction and trial & dunke. Witness dozens of artisans demonstrating their craftsmanship and selling their unique wares. Enjoy digging into our savory delicacies - from steak-on-a-stake, pita pockets, succulent turkey legs, portabella mushroom sandwiches, mile-high cakes and more!"

The local website from which I obtained some of these pictures is called the Syracuse Voice, from its summary of the 2001 Sterling Renaissance Festival.

Other Renaissance Festivals around the United States or even Internationally. When I did the search for this story, I found several other places that also have such festivals. The links follow below:

    STUART LITTLE 2
    Lynn Goddard
    October 13, 2002

Stuart Little 2 is as funny and warm as the original. In the year 2000, Stuart Little generated quite a fanfare and millions of dollars. An absolutely adorable movie the whole family will enjoy!

Stuart Little has settled in his home as an adopted son and is accepted by all of his family members. Even Snowbell the cat has accepted him, how- ever, somtimes doesn't like to show it. Stuart senses he is different and wishes he had friends his own size. As an answer to his wishes, Margalo, a small injured bird falls into his lap. Being pursued by a falcon, she pleads for help from Stuart, steals his heart and ultimately deceives him and his family under duress.

Stuart's voice is played by Michael J. Foxx. Stuarts adoptive brother George is Jonathan Lipnicki. The overprotective mother is played by Geena Davis. Stuart's adoptive father(Hugh Laurie). The ever popular Snowbell's voice is Nathan Lane. Melanie Griffith puts a small childlike voice to Margalo the bird, and James Woods adds fear to the fierce falcon.

The animation in this film is as incredible as the original. There are moments when the screen seems to jump out at you, and at times, you sense that you are right there with Stuart in chase.

This film's entire length is only about 72 minutes, which is just long enough for both the young and old.

Visiting the Ithaca Farmer's market- A Feast for all the Senses
    James Bosjolie
    October 11, 2002

Students will enjoy a multi-sensory experience when visiting the Ithaca Farmer's Market located on Cayuga Lake in Ithaca.

Since 1973, the market has provided a venue for local growers and craftspeople to sell their goods. The rapidly expanding market moved five times before settling in its current location at Steamboat Landing. There is a good reason for this. It satisfies a need and provides an experience like no other in the Ithaca area.vegetables on table

The SIGHTS visitors encounter when first entering the market are quite unique. Local growers pile high their fresh fruits and vegetables for buyers to inspect and buy - a very colorful experience.

Visitors may then begin to notice the SOUNDS of the marketplace. This will include not only the happy buzz of people talking and laughing but also the strains of music provided by a variety of dulcimer playerlocal performers. Free entertainment is available at various places throughout the market, and at numerous times this writer has heard and seen belly dancers, fiddlers, hammered dulcimer players and even someone playing a precursor to the glass armonica , a musical instrument invented by Ben Franklin.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Farmer’s Market if visitors were not allowed to TASTE the various wares available. This is something they can readily do at one of the many stalls that sell things to eat. Some of these vendor includeJust Desserts pastry stall Just Desserts, Coyote Loco, and gimmiecoffee to name just a few.

The SMELL of freshly baked bread, the scent of fresh garlic, onions and other produce and the AROMA of various foods cooking during lunchtime all contribute to the overall multi-sensory experience.

Finally, visitors will enjoy the TACTILE experience of handling some of the produce, flowers and other wares for sale that day as well as relax on chairs and benches and letting the lake breeze cool them on a hot day.folks on lakeside bench

With all this happening, it is no wonder that Utne Reader chose the Ithaca Farmer’s Market as one of the best local meeting spots in the country.

The Ithaca Farmer’s Market is open Saturdays from April 6th - December 21st from 9 AM to 2 PM, Sundays from June 9th - October 27th from 10 AM to 2 PM and at Dewitt Park Tuesdays from May 7th - October 28th from 9 AM 1 PM.

The Market is an easy 30 minute drive South on Rt.13 from Dryden. After entering the City of Ithaca, turn right at the second traffic light (3rd Street) where you will see a sign for the Ithaca Farmer's Market and Steamboat Landing.

    Reign Of Fire
    Daniel V. Davis
    Oct. 16, 2002

Not much more than a month ago, I was all juiced up about going to see the latest and greatest dragon movie with the most realistic and dramatic special effects yet-- 'Reign Of Fire.' I must admit, I watched the movie for the dragons, and not for any other reason. The fascination I've carried over dragons has been with me all my life. Before I had ever watched 'Star Wars' or 'E.T.,' dragons were my thing. Did I enjoy the movie 'Reign Of Fire?' I must admit that I did. As fake as even the dragons themselves seemed to me through the whole movie, and as cheaply as the characters and related situations were brought across in this film, those few short and well embellished action scenes are the closest I've ever been to my favorite beasts.

I don't really know where the dragons are today, but since all the cultures in the world historically recognize their existence; they are well described in Job; and mentioned over 37 other times in the Bible, then they are certainly very real. We all know this is true at some point in our lives. But how are dragons manifest today? What remains of their legend? What causes us to "run and hide and never look back? "It's us. We're the dragons of our day. Whether through geo-political politics or the deceptive government of religion, whether we are the source or the target, we all have our persecution--our 'duck and cover' drills. If you do not believe you have need of hiding from them today, then wait until you are out on the front lines, out of these dragon-pampered states and you soon will. The governments of this world are just fattening us today for the moral debasement they need to make a real dragon rise tomorrow.

Our little struggles to satisfy ourselves while we can will ultimately wipe us out, until no man respects the life of another. This type of inconsiderate self actualization will ultimately catapult all of us to the pinnacle of not a Utopia, but a dystopia of disenchantment from our childhood dreams which we began as "one nation under God." Nothing will quench our thirsts but our own annihilation, as it goes with every predator--perhaps the lack of dragons and other such super predators today should tell us something of that fate. There is, however, the meantime to consider. What is this freedom that we so instinctively abuse?

Perhaps the most interesting part of the movie, 'Reign Of Fire' was the little skit which reenacted a scene from 'Star Wars." It's not just interesting because it was funny or entertaining, or because it mentioned another movie most of us have seen. It was unexpected and creative--something to keep the persecuted people themselves entertained, and for a moment maybe we found ourselves laughing with them in their dragon-proof shelter. This was another depiction of the struggle between good and evil as many of us see it within our own families, and it relates back to us knowing where we came from. We still retain a little piece of where we came from, a little ray of good intent.

Despite all the conflict of interest out there and the direction culture is headed as a whole, some of us retain the qualities of peace and good will, of giving orphans and estranged travelers a place of shelter. That is sometimes what we do when we come online. Some of us are here to hide. Some of us are here to make a new life, and a new beginning--a way of dealing with the corruption of it all. After a long week of being burnt out and spent for a cause that is not your own, take a little break to entertain a stranger and share with them the comedy of it all. That is what I thought of that little scene in 'Reign Of Fire.' That is how it applies to writing online.

Take me out to the ball game.
    Nate Cambridge
    10/22/02

Any sport: baseball, basketball, football, soccer you name it, all exciting and intriguing to watch and play. They're all a big part of what America is and they sometimes are able to get us though days, weeks, months even. You could have a bad day at work, come home and watch the world series game, watch the super bowl, whatever it may be, but you sit in front of the TV and forget about your problems completely. But it is also a lot more, there’s so much more you can learn from sports than just what is seen on TV. Think about it, some of these players are role models, they have a big influence on how others may act, mostly the younger ones, and that’s an even bigger responsibility. But I really think that regardless of if you love to play or watch the sport, like or don’t like the sport, that every American needs to take an annual visit to any kind of ballpark. Whatever it may be, any sport--you pick. I’m sure they're all a good experience.

I say this because I took my first trip to a ball park and realized that sporting events are more then just going to watch two teams play each other. It’s the environment, it's how all the fans interact with each other. I went and it seemed as if I was part of the game myself. I went to a Yankee game this summer and they played the Oakland Athletics. Just thinking that I was going to attend a baseball game, I mean it's no big deal--I have been to one before. Not realizing that when I went, it wasn’t as exciting to me because I was too young to have a grasp on what the game could really bring to someone. So I went to the game and found myself into the game so much that I’m standing every time there is a base hit, every time David Wells throws a strike. I was trying to figure out how I got this excited spirit in me--it was the people around; I was feeding off of their energy. And the ballplayers were feeding off of what we were giving them, cheering. It was like we were all working together to get the job done. And I'm sure it helps every team night in and night out. But it is just the feeling you have at the game, you are watching all of your favorite athletes play, and its truly amazing to watch, you don’t really get the gist of how good these guys really are until you watch them live.

I am now trying to get to as many professional games as I can just to feel the same feeling that I did going to the Yankees games this summer, and I love a lot of sports so I will be making a lot of trips thoughout the rest of my life. I think that this is definitely something that everyone needs to make a trip for. Whatever the sport may be that you enjoy. I really personally feel that I had the time of my life for a $17 ticket, it's great to have this memory and I hope that more people get the memory.

    Cliff Jumping

    Lorenzo Llosa

A couple of weeks ago, me and mi roommates (Pete and Ryan) went to a lake
in Ithaca. I really don't remember the name of the place. We got out of the
car in an area with houses, from there we walked like 5 minutes through a kind
    of jungle.

After walking through this kind of jungle, we got to a place, where you can
see the lake from the top, and the way down was totaly horizntal so it was a
perfect place for cliff Jumping. Ryan who already knew the place jumped first.
Before he jumped I went to a lower part from where I can take some pictures
    of the jump.

As soon as I got to the best spot to take the picture, I gave the 3 reverse
count to Ryan who was ready to jump already. So I screamed 3, 2, 1, go and he
jumped. Then it was my turn. I asked Pete to stand on the picture spot so that
he can inmortalize the moment. He agreed so Pete made the count this time. All
I heard was my heart beating really fast and Pete's voice saying 3, 2, 1, go.
Just before he sayed go, I took a big breath and jumped. Time stoped like for
3 seconds, I felt as if my stomach was in my throat, while on the air. Now is
Pete's turn, but he was to afraid to jump from the same spot Ryan and I jumped.
From the spot to the lake was like 30 feet. We found a spot for Pete to jump,
It was like 15 feet tall, but what the hell, I also took a picture of him jumping
    to the river.

    Austin Powers in Goldmember
    Lance A. Conklin
    10/16/2002

I recently went to the movies and saw Austin Powers in Goldmember. Needless to say Mike Myers did again and scored at the box office with his third Austin Powers movie. The cast included many stars such as Myers, Beyonce Knowles, Michael Cain, Robert Wagner, Michael York, and Verne Troyer. With a cast such as this Mike Myers couldn’t have gone wrong. I give the movie 5 stars because it was an excellent movie to say the least.

Knowing that I am not a film critic and I am surely missing many aspects of the film I’m not trying to really critique the movie. I am otherwise doing this to show that all types of critiques are common web material. There are all kinds of movie review websites, some privately some corporate.

Critiquing is a thing of the present and heading on in to the future. It seems as almost nothing can be done without it being criticized in some way, shape or form. Why? I’m not sure but I know its happening and nothing can stop it. It’s part of the human race. The web is just a place to get together where people can bash each other anonymously and get away with it knowing they won’t get in trouble. So if somebody wants to bash a movie they can because nobody will know who is really behind the scenes.

A good example of this is from another movie called Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. In the movie the same thing happens. Two people who are the basis for another movie get slammed on a website. The two men get angry and hunt all the people who are bashing them down at the end beat the up. Obviously this is a “movie,” but the example is perfect. This happens all the time. Short from actually doing this which is highly unlikely, people are unable to do anything about it. This is how movie critiquing or any other type of critiquing is free to the public with no punishment.

    Banger Sisters Is A Bang!
    Kristin Hoffman
    October 16, 2002

Banger Sisters with Susan Sarandon and Goldie Hawn is a must see film for friends of all kind. Sarandon is phenomenal with her humor role and Goldie Hawn is also fantastic. The movie is about two friends who reunite after 20 years of being apart from each other. They have grown apart as well as up(for the most part anyways). Suzette(Goldie Hawn)goes to visit Vinnie (Susan Sarandons) when she is fired from her job. Along the way Suzette picks up a writer(Geoffrey Rush) who is also going the same way as Suzette. When Suzette finally reaches Pheonix she realizes that Vinnie has changed. Like in Peter Pan Vinnie had to grow up. She is married with two daughters and now goes by the name Lavinia. After seeing Vinnie as not being the same person that she used to party with Suzette makes it her job to show Vinnie how to really live again.

Sarandon and Hawn are a fabulous team together. They come alive on the screen and Geoffrey Rush who plays Harry the picked up hitchhiker plays all the comedic cards at all the right times. His obsession with people and germs makes his character all that more funny, especially when he is stuck in a car with Hawn's character. Sarandon and Hawn are people that you least expect to be any sort of friends even in the 60s, but when they get together on the screen there is magic and you wish that you could achiece a little bit of friendship like the kind that they have.

Although the movie is slow to begin with, once Sarandon and Hawn meet up again and start reminiscing about the old days, you never want the movie to end. The movie is a laugh a minute and one that should not be missed. So if you are looking for a good movie with a lot of laughs and with very little plot confusion the Banger Sisters is it.

    Video Game Review:
    Devil May Cry
    Chris Richmond

Devil May Cry is one of those games that doesn't come along very often. It is this rare game that combines near perfect graphics and gameplay. It is hard enough for a single game to master one of these two vital elements in video games but Devil May Cry manages to make outstanding use of both. Lets start with the games beautiful graphics. The environment that you explore and battle through is an ancient castle. It is clear that the games developers put a lot of effort into detailing this part of the game. Their are many rooms in the castle and none were neglected from detail. In addition, the colors used throughout the game really set the mood of the game. Many diverse colors were used but all share the same dreary mood of the game. The characters were also givin a lot of attention. Their appearence is very unique and detailed but more importantly their looks during movement feel very fluid and realistic. This is especially prevalent in the character that you play as. This character is given a very intense look. His movements are also very bold and powerful. Watching this character in battle is entertainment in itself. This leads us to the games gameplay. As I said, wactching your character move is impressive but playing as him is where the real fun is. The action scenes in this game are intense. You find youself in battles against numerous enimies that you must slash and shoot your way through. Sometimes all at once. If your not fighting numerous eniemies at once then your taking one or a few huge and powerful enemy. Your weapons to battle these enemies are incredibly fun. They include various swords and guns. All of these weapons produce very dealy results with little effort. It is very important to mention that while this game is a stand out for great gory action it is definately not your typical hack and slash game. Indeed you do fight in many intense battles but that is not all of the game. You have missions to accomplish throughout the game that require time and effort. A guide is usually neccessary for getting through many levels and the internet is more than willing to help you out. Heres a site that will carefully guide you through each mission and lead you to success: Devil May Cry Guide At times these missions may seem trying but in combination with great action, this is where the real substance of the game lies. Detailed graphics combined with intense gameplay and interesting missions make up Devil May Cry. These may seem like basic elements in a video game but they are all mastered in Devil May Cry creating a rare, outstanding video game. The Event at the Turning stone Casino Resort

    CharlieVanBuskirk

    11-19-02

The SBE22 Thursday September 26 2002 turning stone Casino Resort Convention
Center Verona New York. The SBE was a show case of all the latest news and movie
making equipment. From computer digital effects. to analog mixers which are
used from News to movies , to your favorite television shows.

I went to Turning stone casino a few weeks ago. Not really knowing what to
expect. There was a show case about all the latest of technology in film and
    video production.

It was really neat to see all the displays.

I was shown a camera that is state of the art. instead of using the trey.
To get close ups easier they have a body suit, with a portable camera. An earlier
version was used in the movie Rocky, I haven’t seen the movie, but the part
where Rocky is running up the stairs, is shot by the Steady cam., it makes Shaking
not an issue. But its really heavy after awhile.

During the convention Chris Xaver was able to get someone from the show to
come to TC3 and let us play with the camera for a little while.

It was good to see so many people working Even though I was out of place I
could see myself there in the future trying to buy some of that equipment. Over
700 registered business men were at the SBE to buy the expensive equipment.
Have a great Thanksgiving Break! Try to relax as much as possible because we
will have a hectic return (across the board). I will be away from a computer
starting tomorrow, BUT, I'll be back in town on Sunday. I'm going to try VERY
hard to give my eyes a break over this holiday! Be careful out there! Eric

The next SBE Event will be next year there is no news yet as to when or where.
If you are interested in a career of communications you should go to next years
event, and check out all the latest state of the art toys. Even if your a first
year student doing and no nothing. You should still check it out.
